INDIA In recent years, the Indian government has focused on making schools more accessible so that more Indian children can participate in India’s extraordinary economic growth. Enrollment in India’s public and private schools has increased, yet the country still struggles with improving the low quality of education. It’s estimated that 53 percent of fifth graders can’t read at a second-grade level. Meanwhile, 46 percent can’t solve a two-digit subtraction problem. Unfortunately, the quality education challenge in India extends beyond primary and secondary schooling. Those that do get through school struggle with highly competitive college entrance examinations to top tier colleges and others fail to complete college, even at less reputable institutions, creating an imminent shortage of skilled employees. In a workforce of more than 495 million, less than 10 percent possess employable skills despite informal and formal vocational training programs. Over the next ten years, 500 million youth will need to be skilled to support market demands. Further to the education challenge is the lack of access to financial products and services for an estimated 280 million people. Far too many of India’s low-income families are still unbanked which limits the necessary incentives for entrepreneurship and engagement in the economy. We are encouraged by the new and unprecedented focus placed by the Indian government on improving education quality, job-oriented skill development and catalyzing an environment for entrepreneurial growth. We know that giving people living in urban poverty a quality education, the right financial tools, skills development and employment opportunities can lead to better outcomes. We have learned that urban youth from low-income families are ambitious, and they seek a path to the middle class and not just a minimum wage job. We know that all parents, no matter what their economic status, want the best education for their children. We opened our India office in 2006 so we could foster high-quality education and improve family economic stability among India’s urban poor. We want to have an immediate, measurable and positive impact on the lives of individual children, while at the same time catalyzing systemic change. We employ a range of financial tools, from traditional philanthropic grants to mission-driven impact investments – using whichever strategy that we can measurably prove will help transform the most lives. To those ends, we partner with a range of stakeholders, including governments, social entrepreneurs, NGOs, implementation experts, community organizations and other philanthropies. We play an active role in supporting key initiatives including Startup India, Skill India and Digital India to bring about sustainable and large scale change to benefit the underserved. This is issued as a public document for information.

Researching on a topic online might not always give you the result you need; Sites are divided by keywords; some are sponsored by companies that you can not trust; and others have the information displayed in a haphazard format. Mark Moran, the founder of today's site, got tired of the same and decided to use human power to sort things out. He formed a team of editors and writers that search the Internet for various topics and bring together the best and most reliable material about any subject. The portal is very easy to browse, completely free, and should easily find a place in your list of bookmarks. It worth trying WWW.FINDINGDULCINEA.COM. Sunder Thadani. 20170508.

Email to get proper response. Sending the right cold email could land you your next client, employee, or even job. However, as you probably know from experience, trying to get in touch with someone you have never met, especially if they are quite busy; can be an exercise in futility. Thankfully, there are proven tactics that will increase your odds of getting a response. Master networker Keith Ferrazzi, author of the bestselling career guide “Never Eat Alone”, can tell you what`s consistently worked for him. Here is how he recommends getting off on the right foot. (1) Have a subject line that grabs their attention: Regardless of what you write, your email is in`t getting read if the subject line isn`t compelling. “Focus on your strongest hook, either the contract you have in common or the specific value you have to offer.” (2) Send it at the start or end of the day: If you are contracting a busy person, they will probably miss your message if you send it during their working hours. Send it first thing in the morning or as the workday ends, when they are probably checking their inboxes. (3) Think a brief message: Think about the way you process emails. If you cannot get to the point within a single screen`s worth of text, the recipient is most probably going to send it to the trash or forget it forever. (4) Give a call to action: ” Make your first request clear and easy,” Instead of writing something vague like “I`d love to get coffee sometime” or “get on the phone”, give them some time and dates that work for your, and note how long they would take. (5) Proofread your email aloud: Read through your email, loud if possible (even if it is under breath), to hear how you are coming across. The goal is to be clear and conversational. (6) Check your spelling and grammar: Incorrect spelling may create confusion. Browsers have built in spell-checks- there is no excuse for rushed by sending a message with types or bad grammar. I’m a writer!” It sounds so glamorous, doesn’t it? Let me tell you, the people I have read about who truly are writers love what they do, but it is no walk in the park! Blood, toil, sweat, and tears, yes. Dancing through the daisies, no. As many people have wisely said, there are two things you must do if you want to be a writer. You have to read a lot, and you have to write. Write. Write. Write some more. The reading part is easy. So many books, so little time. The writing part, I am learning, is not quite too easy. This blog is one of my efforts to eliminate my excuses, to motivate myself to write every day, to constantly improve my style. My biggest fear? Rejection, of course! On to more practical things. I am 87. I have been married for 41 years. Today I am a widower with no children. Since I graduated from college, I have been a full-time employee for few private corporate companies. Now retired and living alone peacefully. So. The wisdom is that you should write about what you know. I know about growing up in a parsonage; about moving a lot when I was growing up; about learning to make do without very much money; about putting myself through college, marrying a really, really good guy, and then the mom/teacher/counselor stuff. Frankly? Right now, I have no idea where this blog is going to take me. Should be an interesting journey. Sunder Thadani. 20170418.

Mumbai, is the mega metropolitan, magnificent city of 18 milion people within 437 square km radius. The skyline of Mumbai, time again and again, has been compared to that of manhattan, New York. the transformation is underway and redevelopment hold the key. Mumbai, being an island city, is in need of high-rises, as they pave the way for more realty stock. The new government is indeed taking welcome steps to accelerate housing growth. The easing of norms to develop high-rises near the coastal area will ensure more space, be it for housing or recreational purposes, which is indeed the need of the hour. Mumbai`s real estate is among the most expensive in the world. Sunder Thadani. 20170401.

Cashless India: DigiEdu4all; IDFC is turning rations shops into outlets for banking. IDFC is converting ration shops into banking outlets by recruiting Public Distribution System (PDS) agents as business correspondents. This private bank has seen an opportunity to convert distributors into partners, rather than customers. IDFC bank had recently rolled out IDFC Aadhaar Pay in association with the Unique Identification Authority of India. The service involves use of a point of sale device that has fingerprint scanner, which facilitates using Aadhaar. The customer does not need to swipe a debit card, remember passwords or own a cellphone. In addition, there are no transaction fees. In rural and semi-urban areas, where customers need `assisted digital` banking formats, IDFC Bank`s Aadhaar merchant solution is a perfect fit. The merchant benefits from the medium- as this a new AEPS payment railroad, it has no merchant discount rate attached to it and can provide the service to customers without having to pay the bank a transaction fee. Subject: Coffin homes: Mumbaikars know the value of space. With hardly land space of 437 square miles radius, Mumbai has very small land for its population of 2,00,00,000+ (growing at the rate of 50o every day since 1947). Mumbaikars have learnt the hard way how to live with less, Less clutter, less money, less space. The day has come when he has no choice, but to compromise with "coffin homes", 20 square-foot cages that offer just enough space to lie down and hang a few shirts and pairs of pants. His monthly rent of Rs. 2000 would be enough to a roomy one-bedroom apartment in Mumbai.Instead, his living space measuring just 4`x6`. Mumbai housing prices are currently an all-time high, with the average price per square foot now hovering around Rs. 25000. Housing crisis is "the gravest potential hazard" to society, as only small land is zoned for housing. Regards. Sunder Thadani. 20170211

India: In Pune city, the First city Wi-Fi deal is won by Internet giant Google. The latest contract is valued at Rs. 150 crores and includes capital expenditure, operating expenditure and revenue sharing elements. 15% to 20% revenue generated will be shared with the authorities. Under the contract, Google will deploy its Google Station platform, which has Wi-Fi network management capabilities and focuses on monetisation to make the service self-sustainable. Railtel, on the other hand will provide last-mile fiber to enable Wi-Fi hotspots, at about 200 strategic locations across the city. The plan is to integrate all public places on a single platform to aggregate Wi-Fi hotspots, that will allow access with one-time authentication. Sunder Thadani. 20170209

Adorable 90 year olds go on a blind date and renew our faith in love! Share We have all heard about age being just a number and all that, but it’s not very often you come across stories of nonagenarian’s going on blind dates. Just a few days ago, Miriam Steiner, 93,and Harold Sharlin, 90 met at a bookstore in D.C. called Poetry and Prose for a blind date. Their cupid was none other than Sharlin’s daughter who served Steiner in her restaurant. Sharlin was so proud of his daughter for knowing his ‘type’ and said "My Jenny was so impressed with Miriam's pep and vigor that she said, 'You'd make a great date for my grandfather!'" and quickly set them up. The couple said they had a great time chatting together at the bookstores. Steiner said love and companionship at any age is always welcome and is "up there with Medicare and Social Security." We sure know what Jenny saw in the intelligent, warm Miriam Steiner. It’s stories like this that gives us single folk hope that it can never be too late for love. We’re glad to know that we are never going to miss the bus, because there’s always going to be another one around the corner.Sunder Thadani. 20170207.

Mumbai, I love U Falling in love is easy, staying loyal is not. I fell in love twice. First got me my wife and the second an eternal fear. Fear of leaving my beloved Mumbai. Of the two, I have been more loyal to Mumbai. It maybe a mere name on the milestone to many and I sulk at the misfortune of those who descend on Mumbai every morning for their livelihood but leave in the setting sun utterly unaffected. What can be more condescending to the city of saints and souls of fire? I shudder at the sacrilege and thank God in the same breath. I thank because I am still around to imbibe the Mumbai air, drive on the canal and soak up the unrelenting sun. Mumbai, to me, embodies mirth and sorrow, heat and dust, the sun kissed mornings and aromatic evenings, a future wedded to the past and a gloriously resilient spirit. Regards. 20161214. Indian electric vehicle draws world attention. An Indian delivery person in Bangalore recently test drove an electric bicycle. His deliveries doubled with minimum effort. Started by two brothers Raja and Rahul Gayam, in 2010 BMW's first electric vehicle was an auto-rickshaw. Priced around Rs. 45,000, the bicycle augments a rider`s ability to travel longer and faster. With fully charged battery, the bicycle can run up to 60 km. Once purchased, the rider spends about Rs. 4 per 60 km with practically zero maintenance. Sunder Thadani - 20161118.

DigiEdu4all Good news is that Reliance Industries is preparing to launch feature phone with 4G capability creating a new category of mobile device in India, in a bid to attract users to its telecom venture Reliance Jio Infocomm. These devices could be priced as low as Rs.1000 and will come bundled with unlimited voice and video calling, besides digital content, people familiar with the plans. These devices will offer the feature phones with Voice over LTE (VoLTE) technology, seeking to win over customers from the rural and tier-3 markets who use phones mainly to make calls. About 65% of India`s more than 1 billion mobile phone subscribers still use feature phones. Affordability- the cheapest 4G smartphones cost about Rs. 3000 - and lack of scope for either user have deterred the faster adoption of smartphones. Jio the only telco in India that offers VoLTE to make calls, has added over 25 million users since starting services on September 5 and is targeting 100 million in the shortest time equivalent to about 38% of market leader Airtel`s 260 million subscribers in the country. Reliance is developing two feature phones priced at about Rs. 1000 and Rs.1500 that are likely be launched during January-March. The device will function just like smartphones and will include the use of data to access the internet and make calls only thing missing will be the touchscreen. If Jio launches VoLTE features phones at Rs. 1000, it can potentially shake up the market because the target audience in that segment may perfer to choose phones with free calling inbuilt. The 4G telco is working with domestic handset maker Lava International and chinese original equipment makers to manufacture these features phones. Jio is said to be subsuming part of the selling price to make the 4G features available at about Rs. 1000 (about $15). The cost of making the phones is about $25 and they are usually sold for about Rs.2500. Regards. Sunder Thadani. 20161116.

Telephone Etiquettes and Manners. How to: Effectively Communicate over the Phone. Effective communications over the phone require clarity of speech, knowing what you want to convey and a willingness, to engage with someone using good listening skills and prompts. This article provides some of the basics required effectively communicate during a phone call. 1. Answer the phone specifying who you are. It can be disorienting for a caller when they do not know with whom they are speaking. Try to have a bright, happy voice when answering too, as this gets the conversation off to a good start. 2. Speak clearly. Pronounce your words well and try to avoid mumbling, gushing, or speaking too quickly. If the person on the other end is hard of hearing or speaks a different language from your own, speak slowly and either raise your voice or speak more clearly than usual. 3. Use words that make sense to the person you are speaking with. It does not make a lot of sense to speak teenspeak with an elderly grandmother. She is not necessarily going to "get it". Adjust your language to fit the listener. 4. Use good & descriptive language when you are trying to evoke images in the listener's mind. If you need to describe something well, try to choose words that identify its shape, color, size, etc. 5. Write down important points before making a call. If you are worried that you will forget something when you call someone, or that you will get tongue-tied and not say what you meant to, write a prompt sheet before the call and keep it in front of you. Refer to it if you get flustered during the call. 6. Repeat important points during a call. Regards! Sunder Thadani -20160930.
