In the late war Indian workers were paid three or four times their previous wages. How did they respond to this opportunity? Most of Indians were in the factories for half or two-third of the month and absented themselves for the rest of the time. Had they not earned sufficient in fifteen or twenty days to give them the standard they were used to? The remaining portion of the month they spend in bed or in visiting parents and relations. As long as they adopted this attitude there was no room for improving their lot.
