161214 India: Law vs Freedom - Religion - conversion For your information religion conversion is a state subject, but center and states can enact laws on it. Odisha was first to enact anti conversion law, in 1967 Other states- Madhya Pradesh (1967), Arunachal (1978), Gujarat and Chhattisgarh (2003), Himachal (2006), Rajasthan bill of 2008 never got governor assent, is in cold storage. Tamil Nadu repealed law of 2002 in 2004 after public protest. Gujarat`s anti conversion law stands out because its stringent provisions. Anyone seeking voluntary conversion needs collector`s permission, not intimation. It violates Articles 19 and 25 of constitution which allows citizen freedom con conscience and to freely profess, practice and propagate one`s religion. Your views/suggestions/comments are most welcome. Kind Regards! Sunder T ------------------------------------------.
