Pure and simple; since he performs his task mechanically, in the way laid down by the respected father, he is unable to improve its quality. No a small impediment to industrial progress, it will be admitted; yet when, in spite of him industrialization has hit our Indian, be finds himself utterly helpless because he cannot adapt his undertaking to the changing techniques and consumer tastes of his time. Newness terrifies Indian as he is rooted in a seemingly endless yesterday. Our twenty first century Indian, habituated to compartmentalized thinking in matters spiritual and ethical, feels completely bewildered in the presence of fresh facts- even about his own race. Unexpected information upsets his balance and makes him thoroughly uncomfortable. Novelty of any kind is not to his liking; when it creeps into his life he prefers not to acknowledge it; he seeks solace in mumbling mystic formulas that had been crooned to him when he was in his cradle. Every morning, although we have broad idea of how our day is likely to be, we cannot predict with surety about evens that might or not happen during the day. This is true of our lives too, where life flows moment to moment; we can only live in the present. Life is enmeshed in duality, with its ups and downs, victories and losses. The same is true of stock markets, where investors move from happiness to sorrow and from ecstasy to dejection, with cyclical regularity. As in life, with stocks too, no one is a permanent winner or loser. Change is the only constant. Life is all about putting in our best efforts and then surrendering to a higher authority or power. This letting go is often required in investing too where, after having made a decision, one should not continuously be thinking about it. Having gone our job, we must let go and let existence take over, and give us whatever returns or rewards…. Learn to accept that which you cannot change. At the same time, one cannot afford to be callous or careless, as these qualities always lead to trouble. Life moves in cycles and good times are followed by not-so-good times. On the stock market there are winners, there are losers and often roles are reversed. The qualities that make our life joyous, balanced and harmonious-awareness, presence of mind, maturity, patience, truthfulness to oneself, acceptance, and an ability to forgive and forget, resilience, and trust and faith in a higher power –are the very traits that will hold any trader in good stead, through buoyancies and crashes, and will ensure that he does not lose his peace of mind and become a victim of stress, anxiety, and depression. But it was also vanity that drove Snow White`s stepmother to act in a way that eventually led to her downfall. The transition from what is part of self-preservation to that which enables self-destruction is so smooth that it is difficult to separate self-obsession from self-preservation. Not everyone is vain about their looks alone, their vanity could lie elsewhere. Each one has something he thinks he is good at. Even ascetics have their share of vanity in their power of being austere or “proximity to the superpower”. The one who is vain about her hair is careful when washing it or brushing it. The one, who is vain about his house, takes pain to maintain it. Vanity is also the path to perfection, which is worthy goal to strive for. But sometimes life does not respect your vanity and an accident, age or even may strike at it. How then does one cope? There are two kinds of vanity. One is vanity of the spirit. That, one must guard against. The spirit has to be joyous, happy and positive. The other kind of vanity is that which is born from ideas and norms laid down by society. This kind of vanity is what we all often gloat in. Where you feel you have to improve, work at it.
